Memorable Class Cookbook Interactive Project

I love incorporating cooking into my lessons, especially math lessons! We all love food and it makes everything more fun when we are pretending to or are actually making food to practice our math skills. My first year of teaching after we had a math bake off, I got the idea to compile a class cookbook!

Why I wanted to make a class cookbook:

  • to celebrate each students’ culture and favorite food
  • to remember our fun baking math unit
  • to use as a base for MORE math fun and reading
  • to have as a keepsake forever from my first class

What is inside the class cookbook?

All kinds of recipes are inside the cookbook! Students were told that they could bring in any type of recipe that they wanted and was something they (or their parents) had made before and enjoyed. The categories included:

  • Breakfast/ Drinks
  • Appetizers
  • Snacks
  • Lunches
  • Dinners
  • Desserts

If a student did not bring in a recipe they told me about a favorite food someone has made for them and we looked for a recipe together. I wanted to make sure that everyone was included in this book!

How was the class cookbook compiled?

After students brought in their recipe, I typed them up on the class cookbook pages that I created. Then during dismissal or indoor recess, I would call them up to my computer see their page. They got to choose the clipart character that I put in the corner of their page, check how I formatted the recipe, and could choose if they wanted to put a quote in a speech bubble/ what it would say.

Math, Reading, & Writing Ideas Based on the Class Cookbook

  • sequencing the recipe steps
  • summarizing the recipe
  • create an advertisement for the recipe
  • try recipes and write reviews
  • write a how to essay on a recipe
  • compare the amounts of ingredients
  • convert the units of measurements for ingredients
  • planning to make two similar recipes- add up how much of ingredients needed
  • think about serving size and number of people you are planning to make the recipe for
  • create word problems based on the recipes

These can greatly vary depending on what grade level you are teaching! I did this with 5th and 2nd grade! It worked great to incorporate into my 2nd grade math centers as various activities over a few weeks!
